So, I'm unsure of how to deal with this. It really lends itself to talking about Palin in a sexist way. There's the whole 'beauty queen spends many thousands on a tanning bed for the governors' mansion" angle. It would be very easy to use this as a piece of evidence to point out that is the worst sort of instantiation of a negative stereotype.
But let's hold on a minute, let's not start calling her an empty headed bimbo. Let's consider this: How much has Bush spent of his gardening supplies? On his bicycle, on his fishing gear. Hell, how much has Bush spent on his vacations at the ranch? Is it more ok for Bush to spend tons of cash on recreation so long as it's masculine recreation?
And I don't actually know if a tanning bed counts as a recreational item. Maybe we should be looking at Sen. John Edwards' famous $500 hair cut. At the time, I was horrified by the attacks on his "vanity." Like many, I pointed out that now-a-days a presidential campaign is running primarily on the television. For better or for worse, to a certain point, you have to keep a positive appearance.
So, basically, while I want to make fun of Palin, who I despise and pray will never be anywhere near the executive branch, we shouldn't make fun of her for being vain. There are lot's of far worse things she's done. Like the whole, using tax payer funded travel expense fun to stay at home many nights. Like abusing her power to get back at her ex-brother-law. Like supporting a secessionist party. Like trying to lead our nation into war with Russia.
Compared to all that, what does it matter if she wants to spend her time lying in a skin cancer bed?
Hey, at least it's a lot better than hunting down wolves in your personal airplane.
